What do you enjoy most about being in your current role as an engineering lead?
Over the entire three decades I've been doing this, it's always been the people. To this day, people reach out to me two decades later or five years later and say, "You're still the best manager I ever had." or "The way you helped me understand and see myself and my relationship with my career has stayed with me."
People will come back and quote things I said to them that sound like something I would say, but I don't remember saying that exact thing the way they remember it. So, I think this ability to have a lasting impact on each other as humans is really compelling.
The other aspect is building things where, 20 years later, they're still the top seller in the market. I've built really high-quality, robust solutions to really interesting niche problems in the world. That's a very satisfying feeling, to know that what I built and did stood the test of time. That's been the other aspect that keeps me coming back for more.
