Ryan, what would you say you enjoy the most about being in your industry?
The technology industry is the only industry I've had the privilege to work in outside of working on a golf course in high school and at Costco's World Market. I also had a brief internship in film and entertainment.
Within technology, I've worked on actual products and teams in cybersecurity, family safety, and fitness wearables. We did corporate wellness and healthcare, education, creativity, and real estate. Now, I'm working in consumer software and digital imaging technology.
I've touched so many different industries within the tech bubble, and I think that's one of the reasons I love tech. It's all-encompassing, consuming many fields. You can't be an industry and not think about technology.
I have the privilege of working on a team and in a company that focuses on the digital part, on making photos look better, like the term "photoshopping" things. I love that it's super fast-paced.
I'm currently getting my MBA at UCLA Anderson. One of the reasons I wanted to go back to school is that technology is going through massive shifts. There's a massive shift happening right now with Web3 and the metaverse, and I think people are becoming more accustomed to these things.
However, I think a lot has happened that people haven't really understood. When I was in real estate, I started to see huge disruption happening outside of Zillow and Redfin. Technology companies were being aggregated under bigger brokerages, and power was shifting from real estate agents to clients.
The world is changing, and you get to be a part of this. It makes your job super hard because there's no playbook, and we're all figuring it out in real time. It's interesting; you're living in a science fiction story and get to influence it.
You're constantly understanding the philosophy of whether we need better technology or just better humans. Should we be consuming more or interacting less with technology? What is technology's role in our lives? You subconsciously ask these questions daily with your job decisions, while also understanding how to grow products and help the business make money.
The high-level summary is that technology is always changing. It has a massive impact on the world and everything it touches. Every day you wake up and read something new and different. My goal was always to be part of something pioneering, doing something new and different.
Technology has always been interesting to me because there are so many unknowns, and people are figuring different things out. I've always found that to be very fascinating.
