Challenges of Being a Senior Bilingual UX Researcher at Bixal

Nicolas's work as a Senior Bilingual UX Researcher involves navigating "a lot of red tape and regulations" inherent in consulting for federal government projects, which sometimes slows the pace compared to Nicolas's expectations transitioning from academia. This regulatory environment, while necessary for ethical compliance, presents a significant challenge in balancing speed and adherence to governmental processes.

What is your biggest challenge in your current role?

As I previously mentioned, I work on consulting for federal government projects. You can imagine there's a lot of red tape and regulations that govern how I, as a federal contractor, can engage with members of the public.

Much of that is there for good reason, to ensure that ethics are being followed at all times. But it also presents a lot of challenges in understanding all of the regulations and successfully navigating around and through them. I would say that's one of the biggest challenges in my role.

I would also say that it makes things move at a slower pace than I would like. There's this idea when you move from academia into industry that academic research moves very slowly, which it does. Like I mentioned with the peer review process, sometimes it can take one to two to three years to get a single paper published.

So, I anticipated moving into industry that things would be much faster. And I think in some cases it is, but in my case, on the federal side of things, it sometimes moves just as slow as the academic stuff did.
