Ming, a filmmaker at Humanist Films, identifies "very talented" and "hardworking" individuals as thriving in the industry, acknowledging that while skill and dedication are crucial, "a fair amount of luck" also plays a significant role in success. How would you describe people who typically thrive in this industry?

There's a certain type of person in filmmaking. Even though there are many different personalities, these people are usually very, very talented in their art form. They are also very hardworking and driven.

These two qualities tend to distinguish them in filmmaking, but that's similar to many other fields. You have a super talented person who works really, really hard. I think those are the two characteristics that really define successful filmmakers.

But on top of that, there's a fair amount of luck. You can be very talented and hardworking, but you may not necessarily be successful. It's really about trying to create the conditions so that when luck does happen, you have the skills to make it possible.

I can't really speak about the luck part. You just try to work hard and create the conditions for luck. However, you can create the conditions for joy in your filmmaking career. This means surrounding yourself with supportive people and working on projects that are worthwhile and contribute to the world.
