What entry-level positions are there in this field that an undergraduate or graduate student might consider?
To be honest, this is an entry-level position. I was very blessed that my senior year of college, a recruiter reached out to me and asked if I would like to work for Amazon. I said, "Of course I would. It's a huge company, that would be a great boost in my career."
This was a role. I am an assistant store manager working in retail, but I'm working for the whole department of Amazon Operations. Within operations, there's a lot. You can be working in Amazon warehouses, or you could be working in the grocery store I'm in, Amazon Fresh.
You could also be working for Amazon Air. That's where you're getting shipments from all the stuff you order online and putting them on a flight so they can travel across the country or the world to deliver these items. So within Amazon Operations in general, there's a huge scope.
The wonderful privilege is that as soon as you graduate, you are automatically in a manager position. You have people under you and, as I mentioned earlier, you have that freedom and professional liberty. So that's super important as well.
The role I'm doing as an assistant manager, an operations manager, that is an entry-level role. But I know Amazon does offer internships for people in Amazon Fresh or in Amazon warehouses. Warehouses are a significant part of Amazon's business; it's the biggest thing.
Think about ordering something and getting it on your doorstep in a few hours. That is Amazon's biggest business. How does that work? Well, it works because there are many people working and many managers making sure you can get your packages as efficiently as possible and on time.
So there are several internships that are always open for Amazon; they're always looking for more people. These are some opportunities for undergraduate students. Just within operations itself, there's so much. There's merchandising. There's a little bit of data science.
You can work for marketing as well; there's a marketing sector within Amazon Operations. This involves making sure you're setting the right prices for items so people can buy them. There's so much just within the operations field. Starting off as a manager is a great way to kickstart your career.
