What a Director at a Fortune 20 Tech Company Wishes They Had Known Before Entering the Tech Industry
Bill, a Director at a Fortune 20 tech company, advises that a career path is rarely linear, urging early-career professionals to "continually evaluate" their skills and passions to find a fulfilling role. The key, Bill explains, is to merge what one enjoys with what one excels at and can provide value with, rather than searching for "that one perfect thing".

What have you learned about this role that you wish someone had told you before you started?
Your career path isn't going to be linear. Very few of us know from the moment we're conscious what we want to do with our lives and what opportunities will be presented to us.
I think you have to continually evaluate what you're doing, what you're passionate about at this point in your life, and what opportunities are available. Then, try to merge those things. That wasn't always clear to me when I was younger, earlier in my career.
That's a good format to kind of think about your career and your jobs. At any given point, you could be going down a certain path. I just talked to a lot of folks who are early in their careers, and they're trying to figure out that one perfect thing.
The truth is, there's not going to be one perfect thing for you or for me. There are a lot of things you can do that you're going to be great at. Any of us could do things and be great at them.
The thing is to try different things. Continue to evaluate, figure out what you're good at, what you're better at than others, and what you enjoy. Try to continually merge those things. Your passion is what you can provide value to the world doing.
