Willie, an Engagement Manager at Connor, identifies honesty as a crucial trait for success in consulting, noting that "people who normally are very successful… are very honest with their capability," knowing when to seek help and accept feedback genuinely. This self-awareness, Willie suggests, underpins many other essential skill sets for thriving in the industry.

Who thrives in industry?

How do you describe people who thrive in consulting? I think I'll bring up an example of my direct manager. One of the few things I noticed that he does really well is being really honest with himself and with his team.

Honesty is a very underrated trait in a work environment like consulting. People think you always have to hide things from others to be a step ahead. But I think people who are normally very successful are very honest about their capabilities.

So, they know when to ask for help and they know when to say no. They also know when feedback is coming back to them. They take that feedback in a very genuine sense and try to work better, taking that feedback wholeheartedly. So, I think honesty actually covers a lot of skill sets. It's a very broad trait. But then, if you think about it more deeply, I think that's what makes people successful in this industry.
