Entry-Level Positions for Aspiring Independent Creatives
Willa, an established photographer, suggests entry-level aspirants seek "production assistance" roles on short films or events, emphasizing the importance of compensated work, stating "I don't let anyone do anything for me that's uncompensated." Directly contacting photographers or utilizing platforms like Craigslist for gigs, even seemingly unrelated ones, is advised to gain experience and build connections within the industry.

What entry-level positions are there in this field that an undergraduate college student might consider?
When working in photography, film, or any creative field, there are always opportunities to learn and grow. A good starting point is to seek out short films, photo shoots, or events, especially in LA where production assistants are always needed.
Being a production assistant isn't a one-size-fits-all role. You might be fetching water for everyone one moment, and then assisting with other tasks. Sometimes, being a PA involves a lot of running errands for people while a shoot or event is ongoing.
However, it's not limited to just that. As an established photographer, I'm always looking for assistants, but it's genuinely difficult to find good people to hire.
If you're in college and want to learn how to facilitate a professional photo shoot, reach out to photographers in your area. Ask them about their work and why they're passionate about it. Once you've built a rapport, offer your help on their sets or shoots.
I believe people should be paid for their work, and I pay for all opportunities. It's important not to let anyone work for free, especially when living expenses are a factor. As an older queer and trans person, I've seen younger queer and trans folks struggle when they weren't compensated for their time.
Reach out directly to people doing the work you aspire to do. Offer to be a photo or production assistant, or take on any role that gets you closer to your goals. You can even look for gigs on Craigslist, such as staffing events or working as a runner or server.
LA has numerous agencies that staff events in Hollywood, from show premieres to the Grammys. While compromises may be necessary in the entertainment industry, the paychecks are there.
In essence, contact people whose careers you admire. Ask them about their process and how you can contribute to their work.
