What do you enjoy the most about your specific industry?
Banking's purpose is something most people don't see. For me, it's a struggle because people often view banks as evil creatures in the business world. They think banks only make profits, but many companies do that too.
Working at the bank, like I did at Scotia, showed me there are many projects that truly change people's lives. For example, a loan given to a humble family in a rural area in Peru allowed them to grow and start a business.
After three years, not only the owner's life, but their entire family's was completely changed. They moved from poverty to a much better situation where they could afford to educate their children.
This multiplier effect of what a bank does is remarkable. I saw many examples because I prepared presentations for the CEO where we asked across the bank for stories like loans that helped change people's lives.
So, purpose isn't just a word; it's the effect the bank has on society. People often overlook this, focusing only on profits and assuming banks don't care about society. I disagree with that.
The internal culture at Scotia was also very nice. Perhaps it's because it's a Canadian bank and Canadians are very nice people. It was a really good place to work, with a lot of benefits and a general care for employees.
