What is one lesson you have learned that has proven significant in your career?
Definitely the importance of networking. Early in my career, I actively avoided it. I had a smug perception of it as a transactional, smarmy business person's activity, and it just didn't appeal to me.
I almost went out of my way to avoid it. That was really harmful, both for trying to find jobs as I progressed in my career and certainly as a startup founder. It was a real handicap.
So I've really leaned into networking. I look at it totally differently now; it doesn't feel transactional at all. I think the trick is being willing to give as much as you get.
Also, being in this impactful space and playing in multiple impactful spaces is important. There's such a great community of people helping people, and people helping people help the world. Being a part of that community and strengthening it with your contribution feels really good.
