Entry-level Positions for Aspiring Physicians

Entry-level medical field positions for undergraduates include "lab researchers," "medical assistants," and "volunteering" in medical offices, but Tim emphasizes that diverse prior experiences—from "elementary school teachers" to "consultants"—can enrich a medical career path, proving that "no one really knows their pathway to get into medicine."

What entry-level positions are there in this field that an undergraduate college student might consider?

Some areas include lab research. I think every university has open spots in some way, shape, or form. Others work as medical assistants or in medical offices. Volunteering is also an option.

Ultimately, it's about getting into medical school and residency. People appreciate variety, so anything that you feel will have a significant impact on your life and that you can tell a story about is valuable.

Some of my former coworkers were elementary school teachers, architects, and consultants. The path to medicine isn't always straightforward. While certain experiences can guide you, if this is something you truly want, roles in labs or other positions are possible.

Don't discount past experiences. You never know; they might even enrich your journey.
