I'm going to speak specifically to software startups or smaller companies. You need to be able to work with little direction and be a self-starter, almost entrepreneurial.

That's the way you succeed. I've seen people who are really smart and capable, but they join companies within that specific space and just don't succeed.

This is because they don't know how. They're from big companies, so they don't know how to work nimbly or pivot quickly. That's critical.
