Could you walk me through your career path? Start with your experience in college. What internships or jobs did you have before your current role?
I did my undergraduate degree at Amherst College in western Massachusetts. I was a geology and environmental studies major, which is very different from what I do currently.
I was first introduced to analytics through a bunch of internships I did in college. The summer after my sophomore year, I was an intern for a small tech company called BioLite in marketing. This was around when social media was starting to be used more and more by companies globally.
That summer, I was an analytics intern within marketing, focused on pulling reports across social media. The goal was to understand engagement metrics and click-through rates on their website.
The following summer, I did an internship in the sports industry, working at Fenway Sports Management. That internship was a bit more focused on events and marketing, but it introduced me to the world of sports and entertainment, which I was very passionate about.
The next summer, I wanted to get into a full-time role. I interned at an advertising company in data analytics to really understand the business of data analytics and learn those skill sets. This internship turned into a full-time position, allowing me to hit the ground running in data analytics and analysis.
While it was interesting how that evolved from my undergraduate degree, I found that geology and environmental studies intersected with my passions at that time, which were largely around the environment, sustainability, and being outside. It was a quant and qualitative science that translated nicely into a career of data analytics.
Through my internships, especially my first entry-level position at an advertising agency, I found that data analytics is all about storytelling with numbers. It was a quant/qual science that relied heavily on the thinking and knowledge I gained through my undergraduate degree.
