Entry-Level Positions For Aspiring Finance Directors

Entry-level finance roles for undergraduates may not have "sexy titles," but positions like "Finance Analyst 1" or "Accountant 1," especially those involving analysis, offer good starting points; Shawna, a Senior Finance Director, emphasizes that these roles can be developed to suit a candidate's strengths, noting her own career path began with an accounting role despite lacking interest in becoming an accountant.

Video Highlights

1. Many entry-level finance positions don't have glamorous titles but offer valuable experience. For example, starting as an accountant can be a stepping stone to a finance career.

2. Look for roles involving analysis, even if the title isn't explicitly 'analyst'. These positions can be tailored to the strengths of a promising candidate.

3. A finance career can blend accounting and finance, appealing to those interested in the intersection of the two fields.

Transcript

What entry-level positions in this field might an undergraduate college student consider?

There are many entry points into finance and accounting. Their titles might not be particularly exciting.

I started as an accountant and had no interest in becoming one, even though I enjoyed my accounting classes in undergrad. I really enjoyed where business meets finance. That said, my strengths worked for me in addition to the basic requirements of that initial role.

If there's a role with a title like "Finance Analyst One," "Junior Analyst," or "Accountant One," and it involves some kind of analysis, or even hints at analysis in the job description, it usually means the role can be molded to fit the best candidate.
