Career Path Of A Realtor At Compass
Sean, a Global Studies major from UC Santa Barbara, completed a two-year internship at Decker's, a footwear company, which ultimately helped Sean realize they preferred a less desk-bound career. Following travel after graduation and considering their family's extensive real estate background ("my whole family's in real estate"), Sean chose a real estate career path, finding the best fit at Compass despite the "not very easy, clear cut path" to entry.

Could you walk me through your career path, starting with your experiences in college? Did you have any internships or jobs before becoming a real estate agent?
Yes, for sure. I went to UC Santa Barbara and majored in Global Studies. While I was there, I interned at Decker's, the parent company for brands like Ugg, Sanuk, and Hoka.
I interned there for about two years. It was a really good experience; I learned a lot and met many good professional people. Ultimately, it taught me that it wasn't the type of environment I wanted to work in for the rest of my life.
The culture was good, but ultimately, for my personality, I didn't want to sit behind a desk. After graduating, I wanted to explore my options and took some time off to travel.
When I got back to Santa Barbara, I reassessed my options. My whole family is in real estate: my dad's an appraiser, my uncle's an architect, and another uncle is a real estate attorney. My mom and her siblings do real estate investment.
So, for me, the clearest path forward was getting into real estate. It's not necessarily easy because we're essentially independent contractors and salespeople. It's not a very clear-cut path. But for me, I think it was the best opportunity and the best fit for my personality. That's how I ended up at Compass.
