What is one lesson that you have learned that has proven significant in your career?

I recently had the opportunity to meet some of my coworkers and I think it's important to have that conversation with them. I was briefly meeting them about differences in compensation.

Some of them had master's degrees, so they got paid more. But one thing that is very important in the process of finding a job, specifically towards the end when you're actually looking to choose or commit to a job, is the bargaining power process.

I've been talking about the demand for software engineers and data scientists. A lot of it comes down to the economics of the situation and how much bargaining power you have.

This can be relative, and there are a lot of unknowns. You don't know how many other people they're considering, and they don't know how many other companies you're ready to commit to.

It's one of those things where it's a very valuable skill, but it's expressed in a short amount of time. It can dictate a lot of your whole compensation package or what sorts of opportunities you might be able to get the most out of.
