College Experiences That Helped a Director of Community Relations and Outreach Support at Sacramento Municipal Utility District Succeed
Rhonda emphasizes that working early, even in high school, and especially during college to build a network is key, stating "your network is your net worth," and to supplement that by getting internships and volunteering. Sacramento Municipal Utility District's Director, Community Relations, Outreach & Support suggests gaining work experience is important, but if that is not possible, internships and volunteer work are excellent alternatives to building a resume and demonstrating dedication.

What did you do in college to set you up for success in your career?
I started working early, since 10th grade. This gave me work experience, even though it wasn't extensive, especially during high school when I could only work in the summers.
When I got to college, I worked on campus. This allowed me to meet a lot of people, which built my network. I always tell people, "Your network is your net worth."
If you need somebody, you might already know someone in your network. So, it's critical that you gain work experience if you can. I understand that not everyone can work during college, as some academic loads are heavier than others.
If working isn't an option, make sure you get an internship. Internships are critical because you can use them to build your resume.
My last piece of advice is to volunteer and build that into your resume. Volunteering is like working unpaid, which means they like you even more because you're giving your time and treasure to other people.
