How would you describe people who typically thrive in this industry?

People who thrive in this industry tend to be very motivated. They are also able to develop a set schedule.

When it comes to developing a set schedule, it's important to understand what needs to get done and how. Knowing who to speak with to communicate and align objectives and goals leads to success.

In a technical role, you need to know how to code and understand systems design. It's also beneficial to spend time reading engineering and technology blogs. This helps you understand how to develop a product or make it better.

Ultimately, you need to immerse yourself in the technology and the specific product or software you're working on. This means breathing and understanding it.

From a non-technical perspective, empathy and patience are crucial. Ambition is also important. Empathy comes into play when working with many different people.

You never know what someone else is going through. Having empathy, especially when collaborating, builds trust. This trust goes a long way in developing relationships that will yield positive results in the future.

Patience is another key aspect. Understand that products and services have many moving parts. Sometimes things are held together with temporary fixes. Being able to step back and plan how code will be written or delivery will be made is essential for developing a long-standing service.

For example, Apple is known for developing products well after competitors like Samsung or Google introduce them. They do this because they have the patience to see how a product performs in the market. Then, they add their unique spin to make it novel within their ecosystem.

Ambition means looking ahead four or five years. Predict where a product, industry, or your career is going and try to stick to that path. If things change, be flexible enough to adjust your trajectory.

This flexibility applies to future career goals, learning new technologies, or pitching startup ideas. The world is constantly changing, so you should be prepared for that.
