As a child of immigrants, how has that impacted the way you navigate your career?

A little about myself, I was born in Canada. My parents are originally from Bangladesh, and we moved to California when I was around seven years old.

I technically have dual citizenship, which is really nice. I basically grew up as a child of immigrants. One of the biggest things I've learned as someone who grew up here with parents who grew up in another part of the world is that there is definitely a cultural barrier.

When I was a child, I wasn't allowed to do certain things, and I would see my friends who were born and raised here and wonder why I couldn't do what they could. As I've gotten older, I’ve really learned to appreciate the cultural differences between someone born and raised in America or the Western world, versus someone born and raised in other parts of the world like Asia, Eastern Europe, or the Middle East.

It taught me that there will always be a cultural barrier, but you can always work with that to develop deeper connections. Again, it comes down to patience and empathy. It's about understanding that how a certain person does business, works on a project, or does whatever they need to do might be very different from how you would do it.

This difference should be celebrated, not looked down upon or criticized. The way to celebrate it is to see it as a great way to find a solution to a problem. If someone only wants to do business during certain hours, you should be very open to it.

At the end of the day, when you are open to different cultural differences, others will be open to yours. When you're able to develop that relationship, it creates something more, not only professionally but also personally. It lets you appreciate people all around the world, and they will appreciate what you do for them.
