What skills are most important for a job like yours?
I think that Brazilians is super important. In order to be a public defender, you have to be able to lose a lot. You have to lay your ego down and keep fighting because we don't get a lot of wins.
It's not as glamorous as television portrays it. We work really, really hard and we don't win a lot. So, in order to be a good public defender, you have to be resilient.
You have to be able to take good enough care of yourself that you can get up the next day and come back in with the same vigilance and diligence. This is in order to take care of your clients, because it is really grueling sometimes.
