What did you do in college to set you up for success in your career?
The biggest thing, a piece of advice from one of my professors, has always stuck with me and really launched my career: don't be afraid to reach out to literally anybody.
The way I got started was in my last semester of college. I reached out to a couple of high-level comedy agents and managers whose career paths and client lists I really admired. I would use IMDB Pro and industry trades, like Variety and Deadline, to track what was going on as I approached graduation.
I found a few comedic actors I loved. I was constantly searching on IMDB to see who represented them, not necessarily looking for a job, but just out of curiosity and to learn.
I noticed that multiple actors I liked, including some from SNL and other comedians, were all represented by the same agent at ICM. So, in February of my last semester, I emailed that agent.
I simply expressed my admiration for her and that I hoped to be in her shoes one day. I didn't ask for anything, which I think is important. Just complimenting them and seeing where it goes can take you far.
She responded immediately, asking me to come in and meet. She then sent my resume to HR and essentially told them to hire me. Anyone whose career paths you admire, don't be afraid to reach out. It doesn't always have to go through HR.
We're all people. Some people won't answer, but you might find the one who does. I did, and it has been incredible for me.
