Favorite Parts of Working in the Packaging Industry as a Global Marketing and Communications Intern
Precious's favorite aspect of the packaging industry is the ubiquitous nature of Sonoco Products' output; seeing "our product" or "our packaging" in diverse settings, from "baby foods" to "quick service restaurants," excites Precious and reinforces their understanding of the company's broad reach across numerous sectors. This feeling is further amplified by the realization that even small components, like "tiny products...wrapped around some cotton for sewing machines," are created by their company.

What do you enjoy most about being in your industry?
I like going into a store and seeing that our product is there, or that they're using our product or our packaging. I love the fascination of understanding that our industry and our products are everywhere. They're in every other industry.
We interact with the medical industry and the defense industry. We also interact with baby foods, consumer products, household goods, and the textile industry, as well as quick-service restaurants, like fast food. I like seeing that.
Even though we're not face-to-face with the consumer, I know that behind the toilet paper, we have the packaging inside. We have the corn inside. It makes me excited knowing that we are across industries.
It's fascinating because in the textile industry, there are tiny products wrapped around cotton for sewing machines. They're so tiny, and yet we make them. It just gets me excited. I think, "We make that."
So it really excites me to know, when I'm in a store or a fast-food restaurant, that they're using what we make. We especially made that for a quick-service restaurant. It makes me happy when I see, "Oh, I'm in this store. They use our sorter dispenser." It gets me excited.
That's something I really love about working in this industry: that we're everywhere.
