What a Partner at Lagarias Napell and Dillon wishes they had known before entering the law industry
Peter, a Partner at Lagarias, Napell & Dillon, LLP, emphasizes that a legal career demands a strong advocate who can "vocally stand up for what you believe in," a commitment he finds fulfilling in his work representing often-overlooked franchisees. The demanding nature of the field, requiring significant work and dedication, should not be underestimated, as some find the work unappealing.

What have you learned about this role that you wish someone had told you before you entered the industry?
Being a lawyer is not for everyone. You need to be someone who can vocally stand up for what you believe in and what the client needs. You must be a strong and ethical advocate at times.
One thing I've noticed about law is that many people get into law school and grumble the entire time. There's a significant amount of work to get up to speed with law as a discipline. Some people just don't want to do the work and don't like it.
For me, as an undergraduate during the Vietnam War in Berkeley, there was a sense of purpose in what we wanted to do. My whole career, I've felt that. That's why I want to represent franchisees, because I think they're often taken advantage of and I want to help them.
Law is a mechanism that controls you, but it's also something you can work through with people living in a society. If we don't have laws and they're not followed for their true purpose, we won't have a society.
You can advocate, and that's what lawyers do. You can advocate for the right things and for justice. That's an important aspect of lawyering.
