Peter, a Partner at Lagarias, Napell & Dillon, LLP, finds the most rewarding aspect of franchise law to be "the people you meet and the comradery" fostered within its specialized field, allowing for continuous learning and professional growth through "intellectual challenges" and networking opportunities. This specialization, he advises, is key for success in today's legal landscape.

What do you enjoy most about being in your industry?
What I enjoy most about franchise law is the people you meet and the camaraderie you can develop with clients, obviously, but also with the lawyers. It's a small area of the law.
The American Bar Association has a group of franchise lawyers, both franchisee and franchisor lawyers. There are many more franchisor lawyers than franchisee lawyers, by the way. You can meet them at annual seminars and other meetings and develop good friendships, sometimes even with opposing counsel.
It's a very specialized body of law, but there are enough areas within it to keep you interested. There are intellectual challenges, so you're constantly learning and doing things.
I would also tell any young lawyer that you'll need to develop a specialization in today's legal world. There are just too many fields of law, too many statutes, cases, and regulations. Pick an area that interests you. This franchising area is just a very interesting area.
