What did you do in undergrad to set you up for success in your career?
I guess a couple of things. The internships I had each summer were very valuable in terms of networks. They also provided an opportunity to learn on the investment side and from people who have been highly successful in their fields.
Within my studies, I've really enjoyed my time at Kenan-Flagler and taking advantage of the undergraduate business courses they offered. I think most valuable was being part of the private equity fund.
At Kenan-Flagler, eight undergraduate students manage real LP dollars. We managed about $5 million throughout our last two years. This was very insightful in terms of having the responsibility of managing people's money and working directly with portfolio companies.
This experience helped in the road mapping and product management sense to ensure positive outcomes and return capital to LPs. I think this isn't offered at every school.
Being proactive about getting real-world experience like that while still in school was very helpful. It helped me learn what I wanted to do and if I was passionate about it. It also gave me a leg up, providing experience I could carry over to the workplace.
