Most Important Skills for an Economist at The World Bank
For a World Bank Economist, mastering subject matter and conveying it accessibly are crucial, as is "convincing somebody who does not want to change," particularly when advocating for policy changes, a task made challenging by pre-existing ideologies such as Marxist viewpoints. The ability to persuade and adapt communication to diverse audiences is key to success in this role.

What skills are most important for a job like yours?
As an academician, you must master the subject you teach. This includes being able to convey concepts in terms that students can understand.
It's not enough to simply know the subject matter; you also need to be able to transmit that knowledge effectively. Some people are excellent at mastering subjects but struggle to share that knowledge with others.
In my case, I aimed to both master what I was teaching and make the subject matter accessible to my students. That was one aspect of my role.
Another was my work as a member of the World Bank. My main concern was to stay current with new thoughts, theories, and findings. I also had to try to convince governments to change their policies.
This was more difficult than teaching. It required convincing people who were resistant to change and believed they were already doing well. You have to persuade them to improve their current policies.
Convincing others takes a significant amount of effort. You must be accessible in how you express your thoughts and convincing in your attempts to change policies.
Even without naming specific countries, I can say that many were operating from a Marxist viewpoint. Our job was to convince them that this was not the best path to growth. We had to show them alternative ways to achieve growth and encourage them to change their approach. This was a very demanding task.
