Transcript

What entry-level positions are there in this field that an undergraduate college student might consider?

There are a couple of things to consider. While I was at UCLA, there were opportunities to work as a teacher's aide, a lunch monitor, or a tutor.

These roles allow undergraduates to explore and see if teaching is something that interests them. I worked in a computer lab one semester.

I also worked as a lunch monitor and did some tutoring. These experiences gave me a good sense of whether teaching was something I wanted to pursue and helped me understand how a school operates.

Beyond that, if time permits, you can also be a substitute teacher. After graduation, depending on your state, you can join programs like Teach for America.

These programs allow you to become a teacher quickly and start in your own classroom, learning what it takes to be effective. These are all ways to get a feel for whether teaching is of interest.
