Biggest Challenges Faced By A Senior Vice President Of Program Innovation At IDEA Public Schools

Pablo's biggest challenge as Senior Vice President of Program Innovation at IDEA Public Schools is navigating the post-pandemic educational landscape, specifically overcoming "the challenge of...the status quo" and resisting a reversion to pre-pandemic practices while simultaneously addressing the increasingly politicized nature of education, including curriculum debates and parental concerns. This highlights the complexities of innovation within a public charter school system facing both internal and external pressures.

What is your biggest challenge in your current role?

I work in public education, specifically with a charter school network. Coming back from the pandemic has been a challenge for the education sector overall.

There was a great opportunity to rethink how we approach education, particularly teaching and learning. We could have leveraged some of the things we were forced to do in response to the pandemic. However, when we returned to pre-pandemic methods, we seemed to forget the positive aspects and potential successes of online learning or differentiation.

The challenge, therefore, is to move beyond the status quo and embrace these new approaches that we didn't fully take advantage of. We need to rethink the way we do things.

Secondly, especially in the states where we operate, there's a definite political aspect to education that is challenging. This involves parental rights, decisions about library books, and how certain topics are taught or not taught.

Maintaining autonomy around the curriculum and ensuring students develop as complex thinkers is currently a significant challenge in the education sector.
