What are your main responsibilities within your role?
The main responsibilities within my role as a school board member would be oversight. I sometimes call it being a detective, but what I mean by that is having a good relationship with the full-time staff at the district office. It's about understanding how all the different systems work, especially as I am newer to the role.
I also focus on how we can improve things, because I do think we can always improve. In this oversight role, I also bring a lot of openness.
Being informed is another key aspect. It takes quite a bit of time to stay informed on a constant basis, especially while having a day job. I believe this is essential for me to make good decisions.
Finally, the community engagement aspect of the role is one of the biggest parts. This involves being accessible and present. I enjoy being at different events and activities happening at the school sites; for me, it fills my cup.
