Q13: How identity impacted career.
As someone who identifies as a first-generation college graduate, how has that impacted how you've navigated your career?
When you're a first-generation college graduate, you're trying to set a new pace, a new path. We came from a very poor family, very poor. We barely ever had a new car for 20 years. I would say we were under the poverty line.
For us, coming in, and for me trying to finish my degree, it was important that I proved to my family that their hard work and sacrifices for me to go to college weren't wasted. You do have a lot on your shoulders as a first-gen grad, but it's something to be proud of.
After generations, perhaps, of a poor family or background, you are able to do something different and start a new path. I think that's it.
