Favorite Parts of Being an Advisor as an Independent Consultant

Mike, an advisor at an independent consulting company, most enjoys the "unlimited flexibility" of working from home and seeing his family daily. However, this is balanced by the inherent uncertainty of independent consulting, requiring consistent effort to secure income and build genuine, long-term relationships with clients, which Mike describes as evolving into "more Partnerships."

What do you enjoy most about being in your current role?

That's a great question. Functionally, the most enjoyable aspect is that I work from home and have unlimited flexibility. I can do pretty much anything I want.

But at the same time, there's a lot of uncertainty about what's going to happen next week, next quarter, or next year. So, you have to work a lot to ensure you have revenue or income coming in.

The most enjoyable part is that I work here, sitting next to my dogs, and I get to see my kids every single day. It's relatively low stress in that regard.

The stress comes in because I don't work for a large corporation, and I don't work in the military anymore. So, you really have to fund your income out here. At the end of that, there's a lot of uncertainty.

I would say the second part that I really enjoy is just the relationships I have with people. I know people all over the world and have been building these relationships for years. They're starting to become genuine.

They were never disingenuous, but they're less transactional and more like partnerships. That's really good because no matter where I go, I feel like I know somebody in some city that I could go grab a drink or dinner with, discuss business, and do all that.
