What do you enjoy most about being in your industry?

I didn't expect to be in this industry, but I am. I think like many people not in construction, when I thought of it, I pictured someone in a hard hat on heavy equipment, perhaps on a job site that slowed down traffic.

But when I found this job, on Indeed of all places, the listing piqued my curiosity. I started looking into the company and saw they had done amazing things across a huge range. They restored a historic cathedral in northern California with incredibly intricate architecture. They also built a rocket landing pad at Vandenberg and a climbing gym in San Luis Obispo.

It was fascinating to see this range of projects from three young friends. I went after the job and got it. The thing I really love about this industry is precisely that. Construction is about everything.

You wouldn't be able to launch a satellite rocket and have it return for reuse without the infrastructure and construction that allows that to happen. We just built an enormous wine facility in Paso Robles. Would that company be able to make, distribute, and age wine without a facility? No.

Literally everything relies on construction. It's a common term, but "the built world" was new to me. When you think about it that way, construction truly allows everything to happen. It's where we live.

It's exciting to be part of that conceptually. People have ideas, theories, or plans, but you have to be able to build to make them a reality. For example, I'm not sure if you're familiar with the Hyperloop, but the vacuum tunnel designed to move people and cargo at the speed of sound with no energy is an awesome concept.

It would work, but it's a construction problem: how do you build it? When you consider that, I really love being part of this industry because it's connected, and it's the literal foundation for everything we do.
