What entry-level positions are there in this field that an undergraduate college student might consider?
Most public relations agencies have internships. My agency has summer internships, and we're keeping our interns through the fall, or potentially longer. Most places pretty much have internships year-round.
That's actually how I got my start in public relations. I started as an intern and then went on to work at one of my internships. I think starting as an intern is a great way to get a good feel for the industry and the type of work.
If it's a company you'd really like to work for full-time after you graduate, you can stay in touch or continue your internship. That could translate into an entry-level job.
For specific entry-level positions aside from internships, it would probably be an account coordinator or a junior publicist, or something of that nature.
