Favorite Parts of Working in the Real Estate Technology Industry as a Co-Founder
Max, Co-Founder at Far Homes, finds the "wild west" nature of the real estate industry, with its "quirky people" and diverse backgrounds, incredibly appealing, while also enjoying the analytical nature of the tech side, finding it easy to connect with "really analytical people" in that field. The cross-border aspect of Far Homes adds another layer of complexity and "wackiness," further fueling Max's enjoyment of the "chaos."

What do you enjoy most about being in your industry?
This is an interesting one because I never know whether to tell people I'm in real estate or technology. My startup, Our Homes, makes it easier for people to buy homes across borders.
So, if I live in the US and want to buy a house in Mexico, Our Homes connects you to a real estate agent and helps simplify the transaction. This makes me unsure which industry to mention because it's definitely real estate, but the solutions we provide are like Zillow for cross-border real estate.
I love real estate because it attracts a lot of interesting people. It's a bit of a wild west, perhaps in financial services, but growing up in Southern California, real estate was a huge part of people's lives. Many families gained wealth from inherited property, and people without college degrees found success as real estate agents due to their people skills.
Working at Redfin, I met many real estate agents. Some were some of the nicest, most hardworking, creative, and thoughtful people I've ever met. Others were wild cards, and I think that variety makes real estate pretty fun.
Adding cross-border transactions brings in regulatory and cultural complexities, which can be wacky. For me, the chaos is kind of a draw.
On the other hand, I like tech because it attracts analytical people. I consider myself to have an analytical bent, so I find it easy to communicate with people in the tech industry; we speak the same language.
I like the people on both sides of these industries.
