Favorite Parts of Working in Journalism as a Journalist at CNN

Matt, a CNN journalist, finds the most rewarding aspect of the profession to be "the ability to broaden the world a little bit," gained through connecting with a diverse range of people and sharing their stories, from weather broadcasters explaining scientific phenomena to community members impacted by disasters. This process, from interview to publication, allows Matt to open "that world further" for a wider audience.

What do you enjoy most about being in your industry?

Something really cool about journalism as a whole is that you get an opportunity to meet such a broad span of people. Especially if you're a reporter who has covered a lot of different subjects, you get to talk to a lot of different people.

This could be interviewing a weather broadcaster who's excited to explain a scientific phenomenon. Or it could be talking to someone in a disaster-stricken area about how it's impacted their community. You're trying to help people understand what's going on and who needs help.

To have those people open their world to you and let you be a part of telling their story is special. Then, to see that process through to publication and have people reading it, knowing they're sharing that experience, opens that world even further.

I think that's just a really cool thing about journalism overall. It can be a tough industry, but that's the part that makes me romantic about journalism: the ability to broaden the world a little bit and give people a window into different lives.
