As someone who grew up in a low-income family, how has that impacted how you've navigated your career?
Growing up in a low-income family with only one working parent and another who was disabled, it was their wish for me to do something that would allow me to be financially self-sustaining. I understood the gravity of our family's financial situation and never wanted to feel like I needed to ask them for money.
I always tried to put myself in positions where I could support myself and live within my needs. This really started when I became my own boss at age 19. I graduated from college debt-free, owning that DJ company, and had what I consider a pretty decent lifestyle for someone in college, able to pay their own rent. This has stayed with me as I've grown my career and earned more money.
Additionally, being a sole proprietor of a small business, I still feel a bit of PTSD, for lack of a better term. I enjoyed it for the five or so years that I did it, but it really took a toll on me mentally, physically, and emotionally.
I liked the freedom of being able to spend my time how I wanted as a small business owner. However, being a salaried employee with really great benefits has given me even more freedom to spend money on the things I want and go to places I've always wanted to visit.
I feel fortunate that I've been able to find work that has supported who I am as a person, allowed me to learn more about myself and the world, and continue on my own path.
