What did you do in undergrad to set you up for success in your career?
Okay. Well, as far as undergrad goes, I was really lucky to have gotten an appointment to the US Naval Academy. It allowed me to pursue the things I wanted to do.
I went there thinking that the Naval Academy meant I could only be a pilot if I went into the US Navy. I didn't know the Marine Corps had airplanes; I was a dumb kid from Illinois.
Over a few years, I had to get used to these guys who barked a lot and had super short hair. I eventually got over that and realized I was really attracted to the leadership and the kind of people I saw in the Marine Corps. I was fortunate to get a commission, and it was one of the best decisions I ever made.
