Favorite Parts of Being a Dermatologist at Advanced Dermatology of Oregon

Maeran, a dermatologist, most enjoys the "sacred relationship" built with patients over many years, seeing "generations of a family" and sharing "intimate" moments that extend beyond dermatological care, offering and receiving advice on a wide range of personal matters. This deep connection, rather than just treating skin conditions, is the most valued aspect of the career.

What do you enjoy most about being in your current role?

I think the most enjoyable thing about being a dermatologist is the relationships you form with your patients. I see patients over many years, watching them age and face life challenges, medically or personally, within their families.

Often, I see the whole family: grandma, grandpa, parents, children, and now even the grandkids. This allows me to see the entire diverse generational body of a family.

I believe this is truly the most enjoyable part of my job every day – the relationships I have with my patients. I get to be close to them and not only take care of their skin but also have a window into their lives as they share so much about what's going on personally.

They ask for advice on all sorts of things, and while I try my best, often we exchange advice. It's this close, intimate relationship with patients that is unlike any other professional relationship. The physician-patient relationship is truly sacred. That's what I value the most.
