What do you enjoy most about being in your industry?
I think the thing I love about medicine is the collaborative spirit. This means not only working and teaming up with your patients to figure out how to best care for them.
Sometimes, someone comes in with a rash, and I'll tell them to use a cream or ointment twice a day for two to four weeks, and to take special baths every night. You really need to involve patients in their treatment. It's not like popping a pill every day; even that can be difficult for people to stick with.
I think the collaborations and relationships you build with patients are so important. In medicine, dermatologists also work together. We share difficult cases, get each other's opinions, attend conferences, and help each other with challenging patients we can't manage or figure out.
Another exciting aspect of medicine is the opportunities for mentorship, which I find incredibly rewarding. Whether it's someone considering medical school, interested in biology or physiology, applying to medical school, a resident, or an early attending, you have a real chance to guide the next generation.
Medicine offers a unique window into people's health, helping them be healthier, improve their quality of life, and sometimes even save their lives. You might diagnose a life-threatening skin cancer.
You also have an incredible body of smart, motivated, and dedicated colleagues. We all think, brainstorm, and dream about dermatology, which might sound nerdy, but it's awesome when you share that enthusiasm. Dermatologists are very collaborative and work together, not having an ultra-competitive culture like some other specialties.
Dermatology attracts really nice, smart people, so you have amazing colleagues and incredibly deep, meaningful relationships with patients you're helping every day. It's rewarding on multiple levels. I truly appreciate what I've chosen to dedicate my life to because it's fun, and you meet such great, loving people, whether they're patients or colleagues.
