What is your biggest challenge in your current role?

My biggest challenge is twofold. One is the medical aspect, as dermatology is a challenging subspecialty.

There's an incredible breadth of diagnoses you have to be able to make. This ranges from a melanoma the size of a pinhead to someone presenting with blisters all over their body for no apparent reason. It could be something very rare, a horrible rash, or a potentially life-threatening skin cancer, or even severe cystic acne. It's the whole gamut of things.

The other challenge is running your own practice and your own company. You have to wear that entrepreneurial hat all the time, where the buck stops with you. You're responsible for paying for everything, from rent to employee wages, and making decisions about personnel.

This includes office management, hiring, and letting people go. All the practicalities of running a small office or business are also super challenging.

While it's all enjoyable, these aspects pose different daily obstacles and require problem-solving skills. Whether you're wearing your physician hat or your CEO hat, the challenges differ each day.

It's fun and rewarding, but it can definitely be difficult to get a lot of sleep sometimes. You worry about the smallest detail you might have missed on a patient or a difficult employee situation you don't know how to resolve. It can present a diverse range of conundrums, but overall, it's super rewarding and enjoyable.
