What are some of the main responsibilities within your current role?
Currently, I'm on patrol. Being on patrol means being in a car and driving around, as most people would assume. We also conduct foot patrols, walking around because you can observe more on foot.
Within patrol, it involves responding to emergency and non-emergency calls, driving around your assigned area, conducting traffic stops, and issuing citations. We also arrest people when we suspect they have committed crimes, collect evidence, write reports, and ultimately testify in court.
My specific role is as a lead officer. UCLA PD has five lead officers, each in charge of a specific campus area. We have leads for the fraud sorority, UA North (on-campus housing), Ronald Reagan Hospital, Santa Monica Hospital, and UA South.
I am the UA South Lead Officer. I'm in charge of all the graduate family student housing off-campus. My role is to act as a liaison between that community and the police department.
I spend a large majority of my patrol day in that community, interacting with the public and listening to their concerns. My responsibility is to act as a problem solver for those concerns. I also do area checks to find vulnerabilities and see how I can help mitigate them.
A huge role in our department generally is community policing. We have a diverse community with students of all different backgrounds, races, religions, and languages. It's really important that we try our best to understand them and see how we can best serve them.
