Favorite Parts of Working in the Medical Device Industry as a Senior Financial Analyst
Kimo enjoys the healthcare industry because companies like Thermo Fisher, NeoGenomics, and Dexcom offer a sense of purpose by directly impacting people's lives through COVID support, cancer testing, and diabetes management, respectively, and specifically recalls seeing people "affected positively by our product". This purpose-driven work provides fulfillment, counteracting the potential disconnect from the numbers involved in financial analysis, and makes Kimo plan to stay in the industry.

What do you enjoy most about your industry?
I started at Thermo Fisher, and the reason I joined the industry was because Thermo was a big part of helping out with COVID. They make a lot of different products, like freezers to store COVID tests at the proper temperature.
Thermo Fisher also provided PPE for all the nurses and doctors. I thought it was really cool that they were helping out in that fashion. I was always leaning towards working for a public company like that, and Thermo Fisher felt more relatable at the time.
I just kind of stuck with the industry. I then worked for a smaller company, NeoGenomics, which does cancer testing. I thought that was really cool because cancer is becoming such a big part of our society.
After that, I moved to Dexcom, which makes sensors for diabetics. This could be someone with type one. Our most famous person under Dexcom is Nick Jonas. Nick Jonas has type one and wants our G7 flagship sensor everywhere.
I think he was on Good Morning America very recently. Things like that, just knowing that we're helping people, is important. We're also focusing on pre-diabetes, looking at people who just need their glucose levels monitored.
I think it's really cool to work for a purpose-driven company, and I do think I'll stay in the industry throughout my career. It's easy to get lost in the numbers, but then you see someone who is positively affected by our product, and I think that helps.
