Favorite Parts of Being a Financial Planning and Treasury Manager at Big 5 Sporting Goods

Kelvin's favorite aspect of the Manager of Financial Planning and Treasury role at Big 5 Sporting Goods is the mentorship aspect, "being able to really guide somebody through that process, uh, where they're learning new skills." Equally rewarding is the opportunity to make a tangible impact, leading initiatives such as exploring "clean energy, energy efficient" projects and developing a conservative investment program in response to changing economic conditions.

What do you enjoy most about being in your current role?

The thing I enjoy the most is managing people's careers. This is my first position where I've done that. I manage a team of two and get about half of another analyst's time.

It's really rewarding to guide somebody through learning new skills, becoming more technical, and leading projects. Being in a mentorship position is the most directly enjoyable thing that I didn't expect.

The second thing I enjoy is feeling like I have an impact. The projects are where I can get a bit more creative. I'm looking into clean energy and energy-efficient initiatives for Big Five.

These initiatives could save us money and help reduce our carbon footprint. Corporate finance roles offer an ability to add value, but you have to think creatively about what you can do from your function.

Another example is creating a small investment program in this new environment. We've been in a zero-rate environment for most of my career, and only recently has that changed. This presented an opportunity to design ways to invest our cash conservatively for the benefit of Big Five, which is very rewarding.
