What entry-level positions are there in this field that an undergraduate college student might consider?
A lot of companies, including Helix, have "as needed" positions. This means you're hired on as needed. You're part of the company but in a more separate role.
You get called up if you have availability to do a survey, monitoring, or a specific task. If you don't have time, or if you already have a position with someone else, then you don't do it. You get paid as needed and are hired on as needed.
This offers more flexibility for school, other activities, or whatever your lifestyle requires. Typically, you don't get benefits with these positions. However, you do get paid a little more because the company has zero overhead.
There are also full-time positions, like the entry-level biologist one. These are for people with very little experience who are hired in. Being in an "as needed" role can often lead to a full-time position.
You receive on-the-job training for exactly what the company wants and needs from you. This is without the stress of possibly not working out in a full-time position for the company or for yourself.
