How would you describe people who typically thrive in this industry?

I think the one thing that links most successful people in this industry is curiosity. It's about being interested and motivated and wanting to learn. This industry is so fast-paced; if you stop learning, you're out of date within a week.

I think successful individuals take an empirical approach to their work. They just do it. There's a lot you can analyze about theories and what may or may not work, but those who say, "We're going to give it a try, review the data, and learn," are definitely successful.

This also involves being willing to take risks and challenge the status quo. It's about having energy and integrity. We're developing things here that will be used to treat patients, so we have to be extremely careful about integrity.

Also, due to crosstalk between individuals in the industry, we need to behave appropriately when talking to companies and not share information we shouldn't. The industry is largely self-policing. It has a "no d******d" policy, meaning unpleasant people don't tend to last long, which is pretty important.

Enthusiasm and energy without ego, I think, is the way forward.
