What have you learned about this role that you wish someone had told you before you entered the industry?

This might sound a little strange, and maybe it's more personal for me, but I wish someone had told me that I was going to make a ton of mistakes. Some would be brutal and painfully difficult, but they would all be fixable.

They would all lead to learning opportunities, which is where the real value comes from. That's how you truly learn, through mistakes.

I took those mistakes very, very painfully. It took a couple of people to coach me and remind me that these are just reports and numbers; they're just financials. They're not living things, and no one was harmed if any mistakes were made.

If you missed a time period, you'll report it at the next one and notate that it belonged in the prior period. Just let it be known: you're going to make a lot of mistakes, but that's how you'll learn.
