What does a day in the life of a senior consultant look like?
That's a great question, and there's no standard or canned answer to that. Consulting, in particular, is a field that requires a lot of flexibility.
There is quite a bit of travel involved, or at least there was pre-COVID. That's starting to pick up on a more standard route now. While no day is exactly the same, a standard day typically looks something like the following.
At 9:00 AM, we generally have a team stand-up or a team meeting with our internal project team. Sometime mid-morning, we'll also have a daily touchpoint with our client team. This depends on who's involved in the meeting, the context, and how many people we want to bring in.
The rest of the morning is generally spent between working time or client meetings. Sometimes, if we're working with a larger client team, we might need to have one-off meetings about specific topics or have some time for heads-down work.
Between around 1:00 PM, I try to get off for lunch for 30 to 45 minutes. When I can, I take my dog out as well.
From 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM, it can be heads-down working time with your team. This might involve preparing presentation materials for a client, preparing how to run a client meeting, or prepping for additional client meetings later in the week.
I try to get off around 5:00 PM most days to step out, eat dinner, and work out. Then, I'll come back most evenings for about an hour to an hour and a half to wrap up any loose ends.
