What did you do in undergrad to set you up for success in your career?

I think the jobs I took were really instrumental for me. Even though I wasn't a CS major, I was always sort of tech-savvy.

I did a little hacking; I've been hacking ever since I was in fifth grade. I'm pretty proficient with computers and similar things, and that always gave me a bit of an edge.

My summer jobs were typing jobs. I'd work at a bank, a law firm, or a research organization. They literally had one computer and a bunch of typewriters back when everybody used them.

The job was assigned to me as a typist. But as soon as I saw the computer, I would glom onto it. I could show them I could be much more productive at it than with those old-fashioned typewriters.

Those experiences gave me a good sense of what kind of jobs and roles were out there, and that really helped. Then, of course, when I got my internship at Apple near the end of my college career, that was immensely helpful.

Simply getting your foot in the door in the industry can really help open doors at other companies afterward. That set me off on my way.
