Significant Career Lesson From A Chief Growth Officer At Switchboard

Heather, a Chief Growth Officer at Switchboard, advises against putting too much pressure on the next job, especially for recent graduates, as "each job is a stepping stone" where valuable connections are made and new skills are acquired, emphasizing that a career is forever evolving and not solely meant to fulfill one's purpose. Removing pressure from the next job allows for openness to internal opportunities and a realization that "you're gonna learn something, you're gonna meet someone new that's gonna probably be impactful into your career."

What is one lesson that you have learned that has proven significant in your career?

Don't put too much pressure on your next job, especially if you're just graduating. I know that's easier said than done, but each job you have is a stepping stone as you enter into a more aligned career.

You never know who you'll meet or what you'll learn, and this is both internal and external. I'm not necessarily saying you have to constantly be changing companies, but perhaps be open to different jobs internally.

I think removing some of that pressure about the next job you're doing is important. Realize that you're going to learn something, and you're going to meet someone new that's probably going to be impactful in your career. Maybe you're going to evolve for different things.

I think we often put too much pressure on our jobs to fulfill us, and that's not necessarily the case. We need to remove that pressure and remind ourselves that we're just forever evolving, and our careers are going to evolve with us.
