What does a day in the life of a co-owner look like?
That's the beauty of it. If you don't see yourself at a desk job and really want to be challenged, because every day presents a new opportunity, a new challenge, then be a co-founder. You wear so many hats that you feel like you should be in fashion.
In your day-to-day life, you have to take care of yourself. You need a morning routine, at the very least a physical one, where you're looking after your body. This is the vehicle that will move you throughout the day. So, get your steps in, lift weights, stretch, do yoga, whatever it is. Just make sure you're taking care of yourself.
Immediately after that, I don't like to rush into meetings. I like to look at my agenda, usually the night before. I'll go through my calendar, and my calendar is stacked. I probably have 15 things throughout a 10 or 12-hour day that I'm working.
Being a founder also means you don't really have set hours. Your calendar might end at eight or nine, but chances are pretty high that it's going to bleed over. If you're excited about what you're doing, you really can't help it.
It's cliché to say, "Do what you love and it won't feel like work," because at some points throughout the day, you'll have lows. That's when it can feel like, "Oh, I have to know," or "This didn't happen," or "We got a delay."
But you're also going to make a lot of shots if you're taking them. You'll get the deal, the collaboration, or someone will say yes after so much follow-up. The trick is keeping it somewhere in between. You don't want your highs to be too high, and you don't want your lows to be too low.
There was a basketball player, I forget his name, but the sentiment always stuck with me. He would make shots and barely crack a smile. When interviewed, he'd say, "I practice so hard that when I shoot, I expect it to go in." That's the momentum you get in your day to day.
I think of it like compounding interest, because I have a finance degree. When you've got forces pushing, and you're the locomotive, the engine behind your company, people feel that. They want to get involved, have an impact on your success. They see it as a collaboration, not a competition.
Most people are like that, especially when they see that what you're trying to do hasn't been done before. If you can tap into that with the people you're approaching, they feel like they're part of history, and really, they are.
It's a lot of repetition, a lot of follow-up, and a lot of looking for ways to automate. Also, I'm a recruiter at heart. I'm finding my team, developing them, teaching them, coaching them, and getting them to set goals. Once they hit those goals, I get them to set higher ones and smash those records. Bringing a team together and working together is a big part of my day.
